Accessibility Statement

At Independent Living we are committed to ensuring your safety and wellbeing whilst visiting our stores. With wide aisles, good lighting and quiet surroundings, we aim to provide a comfortable environment for all. If you have specific accessibility requirements, please do not hesitate to ring a store in advance of a visit, or to ask staff for assistance whilst visiting us.

Vehicle Drop-off Points:

Accessible drop-off points are located outside all our store entrances for those who require step-free access or cannot walk long distances. These drop-off points allow cars to temporarily stop to let passengers out.

Royal Oak store has a covered drop-off zone in front of the main entry and ramp to the showroom, toilets and conference facility.

 

Reduced Mobility:

All stores can be accessed by wheelchairs and walkers with level entry at Botany and Browns Bay. Royal Oak has a very gently sloping internal ramp access with rails to the equipment showroom, and external ramp access (with rails) to the conference room. 

All stores have specially designed accessible seats available if you need a short rest.

Mobility Parking:

We have a limited number of nearby carparks designated specifically for mobility pass holder parking. Spaces are allocated on a first come first served basis.

During standard hours, the mobility parking is free and available to those who have a Total Mobility card on display. 

  • Royal Oak – There are 2 mobility parking spots available to left of main entrance.
  • Botany Downs – There is one mobility parking spots available directly outside the store
  • Browns Bay – There is one mobility parking spots available outside the store

 

Public Transport:

Our stores are well serviced by Auckland Transport Metro Buses, although in some locations some flat walking is required:

Royal Oak

Bus stop 11551 on Mt Albert Road opposite Pak n Save is serviced by buses 30 (city to Onehunga), 66 (sylvia Park to Pt Chevalier) and 295 (city to Ellerslie)
It is then a flat 200m walk along Erson Ave to a slightly sloping driveway to the store.

Browns Bay

Bus stop 4400 East Coast Bays Library is serviced by buses:
83 (Takapuna to Albany), 856 (Long Bay), 865 (Pinehill), 878 (Glamorgan)
It is then a short flat walk of 50 Metres across a residential and light industrial road.

Botany

Our Botany store is best accessed by private car or taxi. However, Bus 314 from Middlemore and Otara stops across the road at Stop 2438. There is a controlled pedestrian crossing and a 100m flat distance to travel.
From Manukau or Botany catch bus 35 to stop1234 on corner Chapel and Ormiston for a flat walk of approximately 11 minutes.
 

Our Store layouts and facilities:

Courtesy Wheelchair:

We have a transit wheelchair (18”) available at each venue if you or someone you’re coming with has mobility needs. You can request one of these by calling us ahead of your visit. 

Accessible Toilets in our Stores:

Royal Oak has three toilets, easily accessed from either the showroom or the conference room. 

Browns Bay has an accessible toilet in the lobby of the attached medical centre.

Directional signage indicates where these toilets are at each venue or ask any uniformed staff member for assistance and directions.   

For Botany, please ask staff for direction to the toilet if required.

Blind or low vision:

Visually impaired patrons can call the store between Monday and Friday, 9am to 5pm to alert staff to assist with your visit. 

Whilst in-store, feel free to ask for assistance or advice from any of our experienced and knowledgeable uniformed staff members.

Guide dogs are welcome at all stores.

 

Conference and Meeting Room at Royal Oak Store:

Both rooms have –

  • Direct access 10mtrs from the main entrance
  • Air conditioning
  • Accessible kitchen facilities
  • Accessible toilet facilities nearby
  • Free Wi-Fi

 The Conference room also has a hearing loop


Health and Wellness:

  • Be assured, we follow the strictest hygiene standards and protocols as the health and wellbeing of our visitors and team are central to our welcome and manaakitanga.
  • Cleaning of our stores, public bathrooms, and public spaces occur regularly in line with our enhanced on-site hygiene and safety measures. 
  • You are welcome to wear a mask while visiting our stores.
  • For the wellbeing of all visitors and our staff, please consider your health status before attending our stores. If you are feeling unwell, please stay at home.  


Emergencies:

In the unlikely case of an emergency, Our trained staff will follow pre-set procedures, to ensure the timely and safe evacuation of all visitors on site. Please follow their instruction
