Cerebral Palsy (CP)

What is CP?

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move & maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood.

The symptoms of CP vary from person to person, however all people with CP have problems with their movement and posture.

CP does not get worse over time, though exact symptoms can change over a person’s life.

Signs and Symptoms

Cerebral Palsy symptoms vary in type and severity depending on the location of the brain injury that led to the condition.

General symptoms include trouble with movement and coordination, speech and eating, development, and other issues.

What are the early signs of cerebral palsy?

  • Developmental delays. The child is slow to reach milestones such as rolling over, sitting, crawling, and walking. ...
  • Abnormal muscle tone. Body parts are floppy or too stiff.
  • Abnormal posture.

What causes CP?

Cerebral Palsy is caused by damage or abnormal development in the parts of the brain that control movement. These events can happen before, during, or shortly after birth or in the first few years of life, when the brain is still developing.

In many cases, the exact cause of Cerebral Palsy is not known.

Treatment

There is currently no cure, but treatments can help improve function. The symptoms of CP may vary during the child's development, but the condition doesn't get worse.
