Building disabled person and whānau wellbeing

Feedback is sought on wellbeing and respite initiatives for disabled people, family and whānau.

Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People would like to hear from disabled people, tāngata whaikaha Māori, families and whānau.

When: Monday 25th March, 10am-12pm

Where: Independent Living Charitable Trust (accessible conference room) -  14 Erson Ave, Royal Oak.

With: Hannah Perry and Jo Witko - Enabling Good Lives - Whaikaha

Whaikaha have heard community concerns about the lack of access to respite services, particularly in the Auckland, Northland and Tairāwhiti regions.

    • Whaikaha acknowledge and have heard the huge amount of consultation around respite / carers strategies over the years.
    • We have funding for an initial investment into the community to create some supports for planning and facilitation to sustain disabled person and whānau wellbeing. We want to make sure what we invest in is what the community is seeking.
    • Initiatives could involve supporting disabled people, tāngata whaikaha Māori and whānau explore:
      • what would build their whānau wellbeing
      • creating a plan
      • putting plans into action
      • using disability funding confidently (incl. connecting with mainstream supports and opportunities)

We’re keen to get feedback from disabled people, tāngata whaikaha Māori and whānau about community’s priorities, what we’ve got right and what they’d like to see that’s different and what needs to change in our planning.

    • We would like to hear the stories of whānau who have tried new things to improve their wellbeing.
